Born on 1 October 1946 in Wolverhampton, England, Dave Holland studied classical music at the Guildhall School of Music in London and played principal bass in the orchestra. He was playing in Ronnie Scott?s Band when Miles Davis heard him and asked him to join his outfit. In 1977, Dave recorded Emerald Tears, his first solo bass performance, and since then he has given many solo concerts playing both bass and cello. After more than a decade of playing as a top-level sideman, Dave Holland has emerged with a fantastic quintet, featuring Steve Coleman (reeds and flute), Marvin Smith (drums), Robin Eubanks (trombone) and Kenny Wheeler (trumpet).
