It will be necessary for a pupil to have mastered the rudiments of musical theory, before trying to read the First Part of this Method: to be acquainted with the different values (as regards time) of the various notes and rests, common time and the significance and effect of the dot and the slur.
Before proceeding to the Second Part he should be acquainted with all the different kinds of time, all the scales and the irregular groups of notes (such as triplets, quintuplets etc.) while knowledge of everything pertaining to ligatures, embellishments etc. may be deferred till the Third Part is reached.

The correct rhythmical articulation consist in pronouncing the name of each note exactly in the same manner as though the words were being read.
