Il manuale di Herbert L. Clarke Technical Studies for the Cornet ha rappresentato per molte generazioni un testo fondamentale per il perfezionamento della tecnica dello strumento, offrendo ai trombettisti un'ottima base per la formazione.

Nel tentativo di rendere accessibili questi importanti studi anche ai trombettisti meno esperti, Larry Clark li ha riorganizzati per tonalità, permettendo così ai musicisti in fase di apprendimento di familiarizzare prima con gli studi nelle tonalità più semplici, per poi passare a quelle più complesse. Tutti gli studi sono organizzati per tonalità, a partire da Do maggiore/La minore, con l'eccezione del decimo studio, incentrato sulle note di abbellimento.
