Josef Rheinberger, in full Josef Gabriel Rheinberger, (1839–1901), was a German composer and teacher, well known for his compositions for organ which are rated as among the finest 19th-century works for that instrument. What is not so well known is his output for choir and, more specifically, his works for secular mixed a cappella choir.

This publication sets out to provide an analysis of these works to show the merit of these charming miniatures for mixed a cappella choir; works with sophistication and composed in a unique style. Rheinberger’s individual, yet approachable, style is characterized by convincing handling of the choral medium.
